Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Eduardo Bolsonaro to start a four-year sentence and cancelled his Brazilian passport. Bolsonaro lives in Texas.
A Brazilian Supreme Court justice on Thursday ordered the arrest of Eduardo Bolsonaro and cancelled his Brazilian passport, the Associated Press reported. Bolsonaro, 42, a former lawmaker and brother of presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, lives in Texas and holds a US green card.
He was sentenced in June to four years in prison for lobbying the Trump administration to impose sanctions on Brazilian officials and higher tariffs on Brazilian exports during the trial of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro. Agencia Brasil said Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the sentence of four years and two months executed after declaring the case final.
Moraes wrote that the defendant cannot benefit from fleeing the country to block the criminal law, AP reported. He warned federal police to arrest Bolsonaro if he returns to Brazil. Agencia Brasil said he is unlikely to serve the sentence while abroad and that a US extradition request would be difficult.
De Moraes led the investigation that ended with Jair Bolsonaro sentenced last year to 27 years over a coup attempt. AP noted that the justice has since faced corruption accusations. The Bolsonaro family regards him as a political enemy.
The order is an arrest warrant and a passport cancellation, not a report that Eduardo Bolsonaro is in custody.
