Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australia remembers about 1,200 people killed on October 7, 2023, including Australian Galit Carbone, and still wants the Gaza peace plan carried out.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese marked the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attack in a statement dated Wednesday. He said Australia pauses to remember about 1,200 people killed, which he called the largest loss of Jewish life on a single day since the Holocaust.
The statement named Australian Galit Carbone among those killed and said her family lives with her absence. Albanese said Australia stands with the Jewish community in the country and elsewhere, and against antisemitism and racism.
He said Australia stands against Hamas, which must disarm and play no role in Palestine's future. The government continues to push for the Gaza peace plan after what the statement called terrible civilian suffering.
Albanese said Australia welcomes genuine moves toward a just and lasting peace with Israel and Palestine living side by side inside recognised borders. The statement did not announce a new aid package or a diplomatic initiative.
News.com.au reported that opposition remarks also marked the anniversary. Those comments were not part of the prime minister's text.
