Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a Wednesday statement remembering the 7 October 2023 attack, mourning Australian Galit Carbone, and restating support for a Gaza peace plan.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Wednesday that Australia was pausing to remember the Hamas attack in Israel on 7 October 2023. The statement was posted on the prime minister's website.

He said about 1,200 people were killed, which he called the largest loss of Jewish life on a single day since the Holocaust, and he referred to people taken into captivity and to families who waited for news. The statement named Australian Galit Carbone and said the government mourns her.

Albanese said the choice to attack a music festival was a message that Hamas stands against humanity. He said Australia continues to press for implementation of the Gaza peace plan after civilian suffering and loss of life.

The statement said the government welcomes genuine moves toward a just and lasting peace with Israel and Palestine living side by side inside recognised borders. It did not announce a new policy or a parliamentary vote.

The text is an official remembrance. It does not include a casualty update from Gaza or a schedule of Australian ceremonies.
