President Donald Trump said on Friday he had reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply diesel fuel to the United States and global markets. Trump posted that Russia would immediately provide over 300000 tons, another 500000 tons in November, and 1 million tons thereafter, with more possible depending on refinery conditions.
The US Treasury Department issued a general license authorizing the sale, delivery and importation of Russian diesel until 7 April 2027. The move reverses years of sanctions pressure on Russian energy exports linked to the war in Ukraine and comes amid high US fuel prices ahead of midterm elections.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticised the deal, saying Ukrainian negotiators were being used as a smokescreen. Analysts questioned whether the volumes would meaningfully lower prices given tight global supplies and damage to Russian refineries.
The Kremlin confirmed Putin reaffirmed Russia's readiness to supply oil and petroleum products during the call, which also covered other bilateral and regional issues.
