Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said India and the United States have reached a plateau in trade-deal talks and that further give or take would be very difficult.
India and the United States have reached a plateau in trade-deal talks, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday, Reuters reported from New Delhi.
Giving or taking more beyond that plateau would be very, very difficult for both countries, she said. She added that if there were rooms to operate from, India and the United States would do it.
Reuters linked her remarks to earlier reporting that a deal was not imminent. The Monday dispatch did not set out tariff lines still in dispute, a timetable or a US response to the plateau comment.
The comment lands as Indian officials have also been hosting other economic visitors in New Delhi. It does not by itself close the negotiation.
No joint statement or revised offer was cited in the Reuters report.
