The Nikkei 225 ended Tuesday at 70,683.98, up 1.05 percent, its first close above 70,000 since early July, as AI and semiconductor shares led gains.
The Nikkei 225 closed above 70,000 on Tuesday for the first time since early July, ending up 737.12 points, or 1.05 percent, at 70,683.98, Kyodo News reported.
The broader Topix rose 38.34 points, or 0.92 percent, to 4,183.56. On the Prime Market, nonferrous metals, precision instruments and insurance shares were among the main gainers.
Dealers told Kyodo the session followed overnight Wall Street gains in technology shares after Hon Hai Precision Industry reported strong September sales, read as a sign of demand for AI infrastructure. Masahiro Yamaguchi of SMBC Trust Bank said hopes of monetising AI were driving related buying, but that the momentum might last only through the week.
The dollar traded in the lower 158-yen range in Tokyo. The 10-year Japanese government bond yield rose 0.020 percentage point to 3.105 percent.
Kyodo attributed the currency move to speculation that the Japan-US interest-rate gap would widen. It did not report a Bank of Japan policy change on Tuesday.
