Tokyo's Nikkei 225 ended Tuesday at 70,683.98, up 1.05 percent, as AI and semiconductor shares followed a Wall Street rally. The dollar traded near 158 yen.
The Nikkei Stock Average closed Tuesday above 70,000 for the first time since early July, Kyodo News reported. The 225-issue index rose 737.12 points, or 1.05 percent, to 70,683.98. The broader Topix gained 38.34 points, or 0.92 percent, to 4,183.56.
Dealers cited overnight gains on Wall Street and robust September sales from Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry, a signal of demand for AI infrastructure. Nonferrous metals, precision instruments and insurance shares led the Prime Market.
The dollar strengthened into the lower 158-yen range. At 5 p.m. in Tokyo it traded at 158.10-13 yen, compared with 157.84-94 yen in New York, Kyodo said. The euro was quoted at 1.1239-1.1241 dollars.
The yield on the 10-year Japanese government bond ended up 0.020 percentage point at 3.105 percent, following higher US Treasury yields.
Kyodo did not report a policy statement from the Bank of Japan tied to the session. Traders attributed the move mainly to external equity and currency cues.
