The Nasdaq composite rose 1.1 percent to a record 27,477.31 on Monday. The S&P 500 gained 0.7 percent and the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.31 percent, while Brent crude settled a little above $100.

US stocks finished higher on Monday, 5 October, with the Nasdaq composite setting a record. The Associated Press said the Nasdaq rose 286.45 points, or 1.1 percent, to 27,477.31. The S&P 500 added 51.23 points, or 0.7 percent, to 7,773.95, within 0.3 percent of its summer high. The Dow rose 90.94 points, or 0.2 percent, to 51,267.90.

Buyout news helped the tape. Reuters said PTC, the top gainer in the S&P 500 during the session, jumped after Schneider Electric agreed to buy the software firm for about $22.6 billion. Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft and Tesla were higher in morning trade, Reuters reported.

Bonds did not follow equities. AP said the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.31 percent. Oil stayed volatile: Brent crude moved between $100 and $103 and settled a little above $100, AP reported.

For the year, AP said the S&P 500 was up 13.6 percent, the Dow 6.7 percent, the Nasdaq 18.2 percent and the Russell 2000 14.7 percent. The Russell rose 0.5 percent on the day to 2,847.14.

Traders still have inflation, energy supply and the path of yields in front of them. Monday’s session showed equity buyers willing to pay up for software and megacap technology even with the 10-year above 5 percent.
