The S&P 500 rose 0.7 percent and the Nasdaq climbed 1.1 percent to a record on Monday, while the Dow added 0.2 percent. Brent crude settled a little above $100 and the 10-year yield rose to 5.31 percent.

US stocks finished higher on Monday, with the Nasdaq composite setting a record after buyout news helped lift the market, the Associated Press reported. The S&P 500 rose 51.23 points, or 0.7 percent, to 7,773.95, leaving it within 0.3 percent of its summer high.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 90.94 points, or 0.2 percent, to 51,267.90. The Nasdaq rose 286.45 points, or 1.1 percent, to 27,477.31. The Russell 2000 added 14.24 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,847.14, AP said.

Brent crude swung between $100 and $103 a barrel before settling a little over $100. In the bond market, the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.31 percent. Reuters, writing earlier in the session, had the yield near 5.296 percent and linked the move to worries over government finances, debt issuance and energy costs.

For the year, AP said the S&P 500 was up 13.6 percent, the Dow 6.7 percent, the Nasdaq 18.2 percent and the Russell 2000 14.7 percent. Intraday, Reuters noted PTC as the S&P's top gainer after Schneider Electric's agreed bid, with the software and services index up 1.4 percent at that point.

Index levels differ slightly between Reuters' morning snapshot and AP's close, so the closing figures used here are AP's. Trading resumes Tuesday with yields and oil still the main cross-currents cited by both outlets.
