Shanghai, China

Shanghai and Shenzhen were closed for a holiday on Tuesday while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose about 0.8 percent with the broader Asian session.

Markets in mainland China were closed on Tuesday because of a holiday, the Associated Press reported from Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was open and climbed about 0.8 percent, to 24,228.47 in one AP reading and 24,234.19 in a later one.

Reuters also had the Hang Seng up 0.7 percent in the same regional session that lifted the Nikkei. No Shanghai or Shenzhen index level was published because the exchanges were shut.

The closure means onshore Chinese shares did not participate in the Nasdaq-led move or the Brent bounce near $100. Offshore China-related names could still trade in Hong Kong.

AP did not name the holiday. The reason for the shutdown is therefore reported only as a holiday closure.

Trading resumes when the mainland break ends; the reopening date was not in the wires used here.
