Calendar- and seasonally adjusted German goods exports were 137.6 billion euros in August, down 0.8 percent on July and up 6.2 percent on a year earlier.
German goods exports fell 0.8 percent in August from July on a calendar- and seasonally adjusted basis, the Federal Statistical Office said on Thursday. Exports were 137.6 billion euros. Imports rose 0.9 percent to 118.1 billion euros. The adjusted trade surplus was 19.5 billion euros, down from 21.6 billion in July and above the 17.6 billion of August 2025.
Compared with August 2025, adjusted exports rose 6.2 percent and imports 5.5 percent. Destatis said the figures are provisional. Unadjusted exports were 123.4 billion euros and imports 108.4 billion, for a nominal surplus of 15.0 billion euros.
Adjusted exports to the European Union were 77.5 billion euros, down 0.6 percent on the month. Exports to euro-area countries rose 0.8 percent to 54.3 billion euros, while exports to non-euro EU countries fell 3.5 percent to 23.2 billion. Exports to countries outside the EU fell 1.1 percent to 60.0 billion euros.
The United States remained the largest export destination, at 13.5 billion euros, down 6.3 percent on July and up 22.6 percent on August 2025. Exports to the United Kingdom rose 16.7 percent on the month to 7.9 billion euros. Exports to China rose 4.7 percent to 5.9 billion euros. China was the largest source of imports, at 16.8 billion euros, up 11.0 percent on the month.
Destatis said the early release cannot explain why trade with particular countries moved. More detailed August results are due on 20 October. The office said short-term readings should be taken from the adjusted month-on-month comparison, not mixed with the unadjusted series.
