PVMBG monitors in South Lampung found dozens of tourists climbing Anak Krakatau inside a three-kilometre exclusion zone while the volcano remains at Level III.
Staff from Indonesia's centre for volcanology, PVMBG, found dozens of tourists climbing Anak Krakatau in South Lampung despite a three-kilometre danger zone, CNN Indonesia reported on Thursday. The group was seen while a monitoring-post team was maintaining equipment on the slope.
Andi Suwardi, head of the Anak Krakatau monitoring post, confirmed the breach. He said the team saw the tourists during maintenance and urged everyone to follow the recommendation because the area is still dangerous.
The volcano remains at Level III, Siaga, even though activity has eased in recent days, Andi said. The last eruption recorded in the report was on 25 July 2026. He said the hazard remains high because of elevated tremor.
PVMBG again told residents and visitors not to approach within three kilometres of the active crater. Andi said the warning is for public safety.
CNN Indonesia cited Detik for Andi's comments. The report did not say the tourists were detained or how many people were in the group beyond describing them as dozens.
People Sentiments Negative
- Andi Suwardi said the area is still dangerous and asked the public to stay at least three kilometres from the active crater.
