A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck offshore Southwest Sumba in East Nusa Tenggara on Sunday morning. Indonesian disaster officials said there was no tsunami threat and no immediate report of damage or casualties.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off Southwest Sumba district in East Nusa Tenggara on Sunday at 5:55 a.m. local time, Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency said. ANTARA quoted acting data and communications head Berton SP Panjaitan on the timing and location.

The epicenter was at sea, 14 kilometers southwest of Kodi, at a depth of 10 kilometers, at 9.70 south latitude and 118.92 east longitude, Panjaitan said. Officials said the quake had no tsunami potential.

Preliminary monitoring found strong shaking for about one minute in Southwest Sumba, West Sumba and West Manggarai. Some residents felt the tremor, but the situation stayed calm and there were no reports of panic, ANTARA reported.

Local disaster officials were still checking the area. As of the Sunday statements carried by ANTARA and Tempo, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

BNPB urged residents to ignore unverified rumors and follow official updates. It advised people to stay away from cracked buildings and the coast if aftershocks occur.
