A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Indonesia's Sumbawa region late Saturday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences said, placing the focus at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck the Sumbawa region of Indonesia, the German Research Centre for Geosciences said, according to The Straits Times and Xinhua.

Xinhua reported that the quake jolted the region at 2255 GMT on Saturday. GFZ initially put the epicenter at 9.69 degrees south and 118.93 degrees east, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The Straits Times, citing Reuters, also reported a depth of 10 kilometres and said further details were expected. Neither dispatch listed confirmed casualties or damage in the first alerts.

The Star's ASEAN roundup on Sunday separately noted aftershocks recorded after a quake in southwest Sumba and a 5.8-magnitude event reported in North Sumatra, which agencies treated as distinct from the Sumbawa shock.

Indonesian authorities had not, in the wire reports available Sunday morning, issued a tsunami warning tied to the Sumbawa event.
