US singer Chris Brown received an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months at Southwark Crown Court for affray after attacking a music producer with a glass bottle in a Mayfair nightclub in 2023.
US singer Chris Brown was sentenced on Monday to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, at London’s Southwark Crown Court for his role in a 2023 nightclub attack.
Brown, 37, had pleaded guilty in July to affray after prosecutors dropped more serious charges of assault and attempted grievous bodily harm. The court heard that on 19 February 2023 at the Tape private members’ club in Mayfair he struck music producer Abraham Diaw twice in the head with a glass tequila bottle. His vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, who also pleaded guilty to affray, was sentenced to four months suspended for 12 months.
Judge Tony Baumgartner described Brown’s repeated use of the bottle as “plainly dangerous” and the violence as “intense,” noting it carried the risk of more serious injury. The judge said Brown’s fame did not entitle him to special treatment but suspended the sentence in light of the guilty plea, clean recent record, employment and other mitigating factors. Both men were ordered to pay costs.
The BBC and Reuters confirmed the suspended sentence and the judge’s remarks from the hearing. The Metropolitan Police described the attack as vicious and unprovoked. No independent verification of the original CCTV beyond court presentation was available in public reporting.
The outcome ends a case that began more than three years earlier and allows Brown to continue his career without immediate custody, provided he commits no further offence during the suspension period. His co-defendant received a shorter suspended term. The next formal development would be any breach of the suspension conditions.
