ANI and other local media said Patekar was found unconscious at his home in Goa and could not be revived. A Manipal Hospital doctor told ANI the death was a cardiac arrest.

Nana Patekar, a veteran Indian actor known for theatre and Bollywood, died on Thursday aged 75, Reuters reported from Mumbai, citing local media. He was found unconscious at his home in Goa early Thursday and doctors could not revive him, news agency ANI and other outlets said.

Shekhar Salkar, chief of oncology at Manipal Hospital, where Patekar was taken, told ANI the death was a cardiac arrest and that the trigger was unclear. Born Vishwanath Patekar, he began in Marathi theatre in Maharashtra before moving into film.

He appeared in arthouse work in the 1970s and 1980s, including Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay, and later in mainstream Hindi films with Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Reuters said his performances won national and regional awards.

Actor Akshay Kumar, who worked with him, said Patekar never needed to do too much to hold attention and praised his voice and intensity. Patekar is survived by his wife, from whom he was separated, and a son.

The cause given so far is the hospital doctor's statement to ANI. Reuters did not publish an official medical report.
