IndiGo said on Monday it will raise fuel charges on domestic and international flights from October 6, citing a rise of more than 14 percent in aviation turbine fuel prices and higher operating costs. The Statesman reported the revised charges apply to new bookings made after 12:01 a.m. on October 6.
On domestic routes the charge is distance-based: 375 rupees up to 500 km, 600 rupees for 501 to 1,000 km, 900 rupees for 1,001 to 1,500 km, 1,150 rupees for 1,501 to 2,000 km, and 1,300 rupees beyond 2,000 km.
International charges also rise with distance and region. The Statesman listed 1,000 rupees up to 500 km, then 3,000 rupees on SAARC routes, 5,500 rupees for Southeast Asia, the Gulf and Middle East, and North and East Asia, 6,000 rupees for Africa, and 10,000 rupees for Europe.
The airline said it regretted the extra cost for passengers and described the change as a modest response to volatile fuel prices, according to an ANI post cited by The Statesman. Indian Express also reported the surcharge in its Monday live updates.
The charges take effect for bookings from early Tuesday. IndiGo tied the move to the ATF increase rather than a change in base fares.
