The presidential candidate said his team is studying constitutional amendments to change parts of the consumption-tax overhaul and other fiscal measures enacted under President Lula.

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro said on Wednesday that his team is studying constitutional amendments to revise parts of Brazil's planned consumption-tax reform, Reuters reported from Brasilia. He argued the current design would leave the country with an excessively high tax burden.

Bolsonaro, a presidential candidate, also said he wanted to cut payroll taxes so that more of workers' income stays with them. His economic adviser, Daniella Marques, told local media on Tuesday that a Bolsonaro administration would review measures enacted under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, including a dividend tax that took effect in January.

Marques, who served in Jair Bolsonaro's government, said that administration had proposed taxing dividends only alongside a cut in corporate income tax. She said a new government would also eliminate the 12 percent tax on crude-oil exports introduced this year, which she called an aberration.

Reuters said Lula's platform backs further measures described as tax justice, including limits on tax breaks. The government has also said it will hold a November auction to buy and restructure household debt, spending 15 billion reais to acquire up to 150 billion reais of delinquent loans at discounts of at least 90 percent.

Wednesday's comments are a campaign proposal. No tax law was changed.
